The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) at Emory
University is a ten-week program, funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
and other sources, that has provided research opportunities in the sciences for
over 1,400 undergraduate students since its inception in 1990. This summer, 86 SURE Fellows, selected from
Emory University and other colleges and universities, pursued research interests
from endangered species’ ecosystem health to nanoparticle drug therapy
evaluation, and from the basic science of particle motion to innovations in
educational psychology and the application of new neuroimaging and molecular
genetics techniques. Under the
mentorship of Emory faculty, students experienced full-time cutting edge
research, with the potential opportunity to publish important results as part
of their scientific team. In addition to
conducting research, SURE Fellows participated in professional development
workshops, and received intensive ethics training in the Responsible Conduct of
Research as outlined by the National Institutes of Health.

The 2013 SURE Program culminated last
Thursday as the Fellows presented their research to the public and to judges at
the SURE Poster Symposium in the Dobbs University Center Coca Cola
Commons. The event had a great turn out
with over 200 attendees from Emory and the local community. This year’s SURE Poster Symposium winners, announced

Emory
Center for Science Education hosted this summer’s BioQUEST faculty workshops
and HHMI Quantitative Biology conference to over 60 participants from various
institutions. During the workshop
sessions speakers presented on a diverse pool of applications that aimed to
enhance teaching techniques.
Participants also worked in groups to further explore nuances and
present problems in their fields, as well as participated in two poster
sessions. The participants’ projects and speaker’s presentations are now
available online at http://bioquest.org/2013schedule/3/.

Each year the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes colleges and universities that have made a distinct effort in solving problems in the community by engaging students in community outreach. Emory University was named on this year's list with Distinction for "its commitment to service and campus-community partnerships." Such recognition is evidence of the importance of community outreach that the Emory College Center for Science Education continues to offer to the Atlanta community, as well as the opportunities for engaged scholarship and professional growth that the Center for Science Education cultivates for Emory students and faculty.
